Thanksgiving has passed, and we are diving into Christmas and the holiday season. This time of year can be stressful in the preparations alone. From buying presents to baking cookies, many people are busy right now trying to keep up with everything.
For some, the holidays are stressful because their family may be toxic--especially when everyone gets together. Uncomfortable conversations come up sometimes, and this gives many people anxiety. You might feel pressure over what to wear, what to say, and what to do during the gathering. The energy of a holiday gathering alone may be too much to bear for a sensitive or empath.
With that being said, it’s okay to need some recovery time post-holiday. Remember to take care of yourself. Don’t just try to suck it up. Here are three ways you can recover from a toxic holiday with your family.
1. Ground and Cleanse
You probably hear about grounding and cleansing a lot. Maybe you practice this regularly, or maybe you have never tried it. There are various ways you can do so, and it’s important to find what works for you. Some classic ways to ground and cleanse include:
Take a shower or a cleansing bath. You can use essential oils, herbs, and other tools that appeal to the senses. Close your eyes and imagine all of the negativity and stress you’re carrying washing away.
Meditate. Focus on relaxing, and getting back to your center.
Burn some sage to help get rid of the negative energy.
Use crystals for focusing your energy. We have several different ones available in the store.
2. Rest
Resting may seem like common sense, but it goes beyond getting a good night’s sleep. Sometimes you may just need to take a day to rest on the couch and veg. Depression may set in for a few days, so it’s important to pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you.
You can grab your favorite blanket, wear your favorite PJs, and watch your favorite show or movie. You can even read your favorite book.
Some other ways to rest include:
Getting enough sleep or taking an extra nap.
Meditation. Not only is it good for cleansing, but it helps quiet the mind.
Adult coloring or other arts and craft activity that helps clear the mind
3. Take Care of Your Body and Mind
You need to remember how to take care of your body and mind. This looks like many things to many different people, but the goal is to get your mindset back to a healthy mentality. Sometimes we sit at home after the holidays, drained and with a family member’s voice inside our head. Recovering is about getting that voice out and getting your energy levels back up.
Some of the things to do to take care of yourself include:
Ritual showering or bathing regularly.
Nourish your body. Eat a balanced diet. Don’t just eat comfort food.
Put the decorations up for Christmas and the holidays if this brings you joy. This can help you focus on the positive and fun things about the holidays.
Use positive affirmations. (click here for free affirmations)
